Like everything else we saw in Rome the colesium is HUGE! Apparently it also was quite the 'circus' on the outside as well as the inside, during its hayday. The minute we got off the coach street vendors on foot were asking us to buy umbrellas from them for one eruo. Even though we had an umbrella in hand they were pressing us to buy another one. Many gypsy like characters kept asking us to buy things. Our guide stated this experience is not unlike when the colesium was in use. All sorts of vendors and food merchants were selling their wares to those who came and went from the 'entertainments' at this colesium.

On the right edge you can see where they have needed to repair the stone work. The bricks there are all smooth looking, the ancient stones are very pocked. They've given up cleaning the stones due to concerns surrounding crumbling and increased decay.

We did not buy the 15 Eruo ticket to go in for the hour long tour. We just didn't have the time and Liz Lev our Architecture History Professor guide made the inside come alive with her own discriptions and historical stories.

The bride and her groom arrived at the Arch of Constantine that afternoon to presumably take pictures. We were on the move so I captured a couple of shots of the two with my 18x zoom.

Right next to the Colesium stands this arch. It is incredible given that it is approaching 1700 years of age. This arch was dedicated to Constantine on the 10th anniversary of his rise to power in 316AD. Notice how the columns are not attached to the arch. The statues on top of the columns and the side frescos were 'borrowed' from Trajan's arch. We decided that Constantine was one of the original save the earth types, who couldn't see a good piece of stone go to waste on some older arch.

The Via Sacra or Sacred Way is the main street and the widest street in the Forum. In the fifth century B.C., the road was supported by a substructure to protect it from the rain. Later it was paved and during the reign of Nero it was lined with colonnades.

The Arch of Titus (Arcus Titi) is a triumphal arch that commemorates the victory of the emperors Vespasian and Titus in Judea in 70 CE, which lead to the conquest of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Jewish temple there, and the triumphal procession the two held in Rome in 71 CE. It is situated at the E. entrance to the Forum Romanum, on the Via Sacra, south of the Temple of Amor and Roma, close to the Colosseum.
