The first stone was set in 1228 two years after S. Francis died. His body was secretly at night moved from its original burial place in 1230 and entombed in the chuch. No one knew exactly where until 1818 when following an exhaustive search it was found below the high altar in the lower church.

Four people died in 1997 when an earthquake caused a large section of the ceiling to come falling down. It is repaired now, but the section of painted ceiling is gone for good.

Romanic Umbrian style architecture dating back to 1140 AD. This is the third church dedicated to the martyr Rufino who died in 239. He founded the Christian village of Assisi.

We had to find our restuarant and didn't really know where it was except we were told it was at the top of Assisi. We were told a name, but couldn't say it well and so stopped and asked more than one shop keeper to assist us. They both were so kind to help, even apologizing for their poor english! Sweet people live in Assisi

Looking over the wall we discovered this paved patio and garden next to the olive grove. Just previous to this walk, we had arrived in 'top' end of Assisi parking lot where buses can manuver albiet still very tightly. From this parking lot we departed and came up two outdoor escalators covered with a fiberglass roof, otherwise completely open to the elements. The hill to climb was very steep and so were the escaltors.

This is the back side of the church called Chiara. Olive groves are on either side of this church. A large open stone paved plaza area is in front of this church and a view of Assisi from it's higher vantage point.
